We can wrap ourselves up in a covering and stand alone in the darkness to revere the word of God. We can only do this if we preserve our energy and seek out own watered down version of the night journey. πŸ’š

73:1-9

1: O thou enwrapped

- When the message was first revealed to Prophet Muhammad pbuh he shrouded himself in a cloak.

2: Stand vigil at night, save a little,

- Prior to the guidance on 5x daily prayers the practice was that they would stand in prayer at night until their feet swelled.

3: Half of it or reduce it a little,

- A famous hadith says "Every night during the last 3rd of the night, our Lord descends to the last Heaven of this earth and says, "Who calls upon Me that I might answer him? Who asks of Me that I might give to him? Who seeks My Forgiveness that I might forgive him?"

4: Or add to it; and recite the Qur'an in a measured pace.

- The Prophets wife Umm Salamah is reported to have said, "He used to divide his recitation verse by verse" - which means he would pause at the end of each verse (perhaps to process semantically and consider the meaning).

"Whoever recites the Qur'an fluently is with the honourable and obedient scribes (angels) and whosoever recites it with difficulty shall receive a double reward"

5: Truly we shall cast upon thee a weighty Word.

The Prophets wife Aishah is reported to have said that Prophet Muhammad pbuh would perspire when revelation came to him (even on a cold day). "When the revelation came upon the Prophet while he was in his mount, it was like a blow to the camels neck."

6: Truly the vigil of the night is firmest in tread and most upright for speech.

- The night vigil is the most impactful because it's the time that we are alone undisturbed. 'tread' translates as 'wata' meaning agreement, cooperation, congruence between the heart, ear and tongue. What we see, hear, interpret, feel and think falls into harmony in the darkness of the night. We just have to receive those inner messages.

7: For truly by day you have lengthy affairs.

Indeed life really does have a way of engulfing us. Yesterday I was given a very hard hitting reminder to preserve my energy. To let this moment be my priority. It is a gift and one that I am constantly in need of.

8: So remember the Name of thy Lord and devote thyself to Him with complete devotion -

Cut off from it all and face God with a thirsty heart.

9: Lord of the East and the West, there is no God but He, so take Him as a Guardian.

At the end of it all it is God who we can trust and rely on. Through our worship we connect with and discover ourselves. When we sit in the darkness we hear ourselves and we align with God. It's almost as though the river (us) runs into the sea (the unseen). In that expanse we are free. β€οΈπŸ©΅πŸ’™πŸ’œπŸ©·πŸ’š
