4:94 'O you who believe! When you go forth in the way of God, be discerning, and say not unto him who offers you peace, "You are not a believer," seeking the ephemeralities of the life of this world, for with God are abundant spoils. Thus were you yourselves beforehand but God has been gracious to you. Therefore be discerning. Truly God is Aware of whatsoever you do.
The verse says that it is forbidden to harm a believer in battle. That if someone offers you Salaam in battle that you should accept them as a believer. The punishment for harming a believer is grave. The offering of Salaam can also be a declaration to cease hostilities.

This verse supports the Islamic idea that the true character of a person's faith is known only to God, and so we are encouraged to accept others claims of belief at face value. That we are in no position to judge harshly and rather we ought to be discerning.
The verses also indicate that often people fight for material gain. That they are hoping to get something out of it. However, we are encouraged not to enter into conflict with anyone for such things. That conflict might occur to right a wrong and/or to stand for truth; but not to gain something over/from someone else.
Do not create mischief, and if conflict finds you choose to stand for truth and then step away. Let go of seeking the ephemeralities of the life of this world, for with God are abundant spoils.
