Brief bio of Ustadh Saqib Hussain

Ustadh Saqib Hussain is currently studying for his PhD in Qur'anic Studies at the University of Oxford. Some recent papers he has written include:

  • Paper at the Society of Biblical Literature’s International meeting in Rome, July 1-5, called “Sūrah 38 as Re-written Bible”
  • Paper at the International Qur’anic Studies Association (IQSA) in San Diego, California, November 22-25, titled “Sūrah 50 as a group closing sūrah”.
  • Part of the Qur’anic Commentary: An Integrative Paradigm (QuCIP) project, which “is a five-year research project running from October 2018 to September 2023 and supported by a Consolidator Grant of the European Research Council. QuCIP will deliver the first historical-critical commentary on a sizable portion of the Qur’an in English, covering some or all of the three longest and most complex compositions in the Islamic scripture, Surahs 2–4, as well as the short opening Surah 1”

After graduating from Jesus College, Oxford, in 2002 with BA (Hons) in Physics, Saqib worked as a nuclear physicist for British Nuclear Fuels before travelling to Syria in 2005 to pursue Arabic and Islamic Studies. Upon returning to the UK, he qualified as a Chartered Accountant (ICAEW) and became a Senior Associate at PriceWater Coopers LLP.

Saqib’s primary interests at the community level lie in fostering inter-faith relationships, and encouraging Muslims to see themselves as part of a larger Abrahamic scriptural community, particularly through a better understanding of the Qur’an.
